Step 2: Gaining speed
The bottom turn is an absolutely essential part of bodyboarding. Once you've learnt how to take off, being able to perform a good bottom turn gives you your crucial speed and projection for the rest of the ride, and sets you up for the next maneuver.
To set up a good clean bottom turn, get into the wave nice and early. Then as you pick up speed down the wave's face, lean towards the inside rail gradually. This will naturally cause you to pull up on your outside rail.
Step 3: Positioning
Always pay strict attention to your positioning on the wave. In particular, be careful not go too far into "the flats" before you make your turn because this will cause your board to stall, and you'll then have to really push yourself to make the wave.
Step 4: Turning
So you've got your desired speed and positioned yourself correctly. Well, it's now time to start your turn.
Project you and your board across the wave and up, setting yourself up for a barrel for example, or gaining speed down the wave line for a different move.
Once you've perfected your bottom turn, you now need to start gaining speed along the surfing line.
